U Thu Kha Library of Kyaiklat

We pass 365 days a year, but only on some of the days do we meet with an unforgettable experience. Some have their own happiest days in which the wedding day is one among them.

As for me, I met with another unforgettable and pleasant day in my life in my fifties when I attended a ceremony to open the U Thu Kha Library in Kyaiklat, a town in Ayeyawady Division, on 3rd (Friday) of this month.

In was 9:15 in the morning, when we arrived in Kyaiklat, which was a two-hour drive from Yangon. For passenger buses, it is a three-hour trip. In the past, only boats plied between Yangon and Kyaiklat, and the journey took five to six hours and the travel time could take longer depending on the situation of tides.

We made arrangements for the trip a week ago. Kyaiklat Township Maternal and Child Welfare Association opened the library at 9.30 am. I went to the town with four other eager visitors from Yangon.

I was the youngest in our team, as our leader was an 83-year old play-cum-film director and other teammates included a 73-year old retired ambassador, and the other two were members of the Kyaiklat Township Association who were in their sixties. They all are natives of the town.

It was a pleasant journey for all of us as we were close friends talking about our good old days while the car was travelling on the road flanked by paddy fields in most of the places, and fish farms or villages in some places. We also passed through some towns before reaching our destination.

The town has six wards, and all the wards have their own self-reliant libraries. Besides, of the 421 villages in the township, 267 have libraries. Local authorities are working overtime to open a library for every remaining village this year.

The natives who accompanied me were always ready to contribute to the task of opening libraries. Kyaiklat will surely achieve success in carrying out its portion of the task covering the whole nation.

So honourable is the history of Kyaiklat that its National School was able to exist firmly as the sole National School in the whole nation when others vanished under the carrot and stick approach and tricky methods of the colonialists in pulverizing the independence struggle, that had changed from armed struggle line to political means, with education as a weapon in the long rum. The people started to launch the political struggle in 1900 after realizing that the 15-year old armed revolution could not achieve its aim. Kyaiklat is a town that dared challenge the colonialists in giving encouragement to the national education system as an example since over 80 years ago.

The people of Kyaiklat won the battle of nerve, and in the end, the occupiers had to hand over the Government High School to the Kyaiklat National School. Their patriotism was strong to that degree.

It may be that because of the strong patriotism of their forefathers, a number of award-winning famous artists and artistes and intellectuals including the most renowned writer-cum-director nonagenarian U Thu Kha have emerged from the town.

It was on the 95th birthday of U Thu Kha that the townspeople and social organizations opened the 8.5-million-kyat library plus furniture, built or bought with public contributions, and donated over 3,300 books valued at over K 1 million. We cannot say the total amount of public contributions of K 9.5 million (95 lakhs) is large. But the more important thing is the library itself that will help bring about men and women with brilliant qualifications in various fields like U Thu Kha and other famous persons the town has produced.

A son of a village head, U Thu Kha was born in Sarphyusu village in Kyaiklat Township on 14 January 1910. He has written 100 novels and 200 novelettes, a book on his own collections, and books on religion and other branches. Many of his compilations have been published again and again by popular demand.

He has also directed 33 movies, and won the best director award for six times. He is a man of wisdom, serving the national interest with his profession to the degree beyond measure. We felt great pleasure to witness the opening of the library in hounour of a man like him at his own native town. I wish many more such libraries emerge in the nation.
